Manchester City coach jokes about former pupil’s tense moment at Real Madrid, but preaches empathy and plans Champions League duel
The day before the decisive clash between Manchester City and Real Madrid in the Champions League took a comical and unexpected turn. Pep Guardiola, coach of the Citizens, held a press conference on Tuesday and received a question about the situation of Xabi Alonso. The coach of the Spanish team, led by Pep in the past, is experiencing a period of tension in his position. When asked what advice he would give to his compatriot, Guardiola made journalists laugh with a response that was unique to say the least.
The Catalan used a direct and popular metaphor to explain that everyone must take care of their own problems.
“He can piss with his and I will piss with mine. And since he won’t piss cologne, everything will be fine. You’ll see. There’s your title!” Guardiola said.
The joke served to break the ice, but the City Commander quickly adopted a serious tone to defend his professional colleague.
Guardiola recalled the old partnership between the two and highlighted the difficulty of working for the Spanish giants.
“We worked together and it was an incredible experience. We shared a lot of things. Barça and Real Madrid are difficult to manage, because of the pressure, because of everything that surrounds them. Everything revolves around winning,” he analyzed. He stressed that Xabi Alonso has all the ability to reverse the opposing scenario, because he dominates the dressing room and knows the club’s shortcuts.
Guardiola compares team moments
Regarding the confrontation on the pitch, Pep showed ambition. He compared the current moment with previous qualifications and considered his team more mature.
“Last year’s playoffs were good, but we were in transition. Now the players we have can make history. We have to take that step,” he projected. The coach understands that the duel against the greatest champion of the tournament constitutes the definitive test for City.
Finally, Guardiola refused any role of “seer” on Alonso’s future at the head of the white team. He denied any contact with the rival board and focused on the opponent’s competence. “I don’t know the future. I haven’t spoken to Florentino Pérez. If you don’t win in big matches, difficulties arise. But Xabi dominates the situation and knows all that,” he concluded. The atmosphere therefore combines mutual respect and the natural tension of a match which promises to stop the world of football.
