A woman died this Friday afternoon (12) after a large tree fell on a bus stop on Rua Arminda de Lima, in the center of Guarulhos, in the São Paulo metropolitan region. Another person at the scene was injured and was rescued.
The two victims were waiting for public transport when the tree fell. The street had to be closed temporarily to remove the tree and clean the area.
Civil Defense carried out an inspection around the bus stop, where a school is located, to identify the possible risk of further tree falls. After that, the area was released for vehicle and pedestrian traffic. According to Civil Defense, the security condition has been verified.
Two more people died in the state of São Paulo due to the consequences of the extratropical cyclone that hit the state earlier this week.
The first case occurred on Tuesday (9), in Campos do Jordão. A man has died after a landslide hit his home during the storm.
The second case occurred in the capital. A woman was hit by the collapse of a wall in Jardim Sapopemba, Eastern Zone, on Wednesday (10). She was taken to the local general hospital, but did not survive.
This Friday, until 10 p.m., firefighters recorded 186 calls for falling trees in the capital and the metropolitan region. There was also a flood call.
In Tupã, in the interior of the country, three trees fell on public roads and one on a parked car this Friday. Two electrical poles also fell.
Civil Defense warns of the persistence of unstable weather in the coming days due to the slow passage of a cold front over the territory of São Paulo. Rain, lightning, gusty winds and an isolated risk of hail are forecast.
Recommended precautions are to avoid flooded areas, not to shelter under trees, to stay away from metal structures and to watch out for power outages and objects thrown by the wind.
