The pointer Manuel ArmoaSince Guarulhos and the Argentina national team volleyballfiled a police report, in the early hours of this Sunday, at a police station in Bauruinside São Paulo, for racist insult.
According to the website GEThe 23-year-old athlete said he was called “mono” (“monkey”, in Spanish) several times by a Sesi Bauru fan during the confrontation between the two teams on Saturday evening, valid for Men’s Volleyball Super League.
Armoa even jumped over the railing and into the stands to satisfy the fans, followed by his teammates and athletes from the home team. Cornered, the fan fled the gymnasium, but was eventually identified by the home team.
“Ten minutes after the match, I was stretching, very calmly and calmly. And a guy starts telling me from afar: ‘mono is crying, mono is crying’. One, two, three, four times, and gesturing,” Manuel Armoa told GE. “I went there, I started fighting with him, but without physical contact. And then Marcos Junior (Sesi-Bauru player) arrived and everyone started talking. Racism cannot be accepted.”
This is not the first episode of racism involving Armoa. In 2022, the athlete also reported on his social networks that he had been the target of racist insults in Chile, during a match between the host team and Argentina as part of the Pan American Games qualifiers. On this occasion, someone in the stands also threw a bottle at the Argentinian after he argued with Chilean fans – the match was interrupted.
This Saturday, Armoa scored 29 points – he was the top scorer of the match alongside his colleague Bryan -, but could not avoid the defeat of Guarulhos by 3 sets to 2 against Sesi Bauru, in a match that had one of the longest tie-breaks in the history of the competition, with 66 points. In the end, the home team won with splits of 26/28, 25/23, 19/25, 25/19 and 34/32, after 3h15 of play.
