No outfield player has been on the pitch longer than Palmeiras’ Gustavo Gómez over the past five years. According to a study published this Wednesday by the Football Observatory of the International Center for Sports Studies (CIES Football Observatory), the Paraguayan defender played 28,194 minutes.
Gustavo Gómez is 560 minutes ahead of midfielder Bruno Fernandes, of Manchester United and the Portuguese team, who occupies second place. Defender Nicolás Otamenti, of Benfica and the Argentine national team, appears in third place with 26,791 minutes played over the last five years.
Two other athletes playing in Brazilian football appear in the top 10 of the CIES survey: Júnior Alonso, from Atlético-MG, and Marlon Freitas, from Botafogo. The midfielder of the black and white team of Rio is in fact the only player born in Brazil to be present in the ranking.
