Hamas confirmed the death of Abu Obeida, who for years was the group’s main spokesperson. The information was revealed this Monday (12/29) in a press release published on Telegram.
This confirmation came a few months after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the assassination of Obeida, during an attack in the Gaza Strip. Since then, Hamas has yet to comment on the matter.
Obeida had been Hamas spokesperson since mid-2007 and always appeared with his face covered by the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh.
In addition, the Palestinian group also confirmed the assassination of other senior members of the organization’s armed wing, such as former Hamas leader in Gaza, Mohammed Sinwar.
Despite Israel’s violations, the war in the Gaza Strip has been in a state of ceasefire since early October. Despite the relative success of the truce, brokered by the United States, obstacles still prevent the plan from moving to the second phase – which includes, among other things, the disarmament of Hamas, a new government for the Palestinian enclave and the reconstruction of the region.
Among them, the return of the body of Ran Gvili, the last Israeli hostage still in Gaza. This theme is on the agenda of the meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and North American leader Donald Trump, which was held this Monday in the United States.
