The company Hawk-Eye Innovations, provider of LaLiga EA Sports’ semi-automatic offside, has confirmed that Ferran Torres’ goal against CA Osasuna was “correctly” disallowed after an offside by Raphinha, who recognized the semi-automatic offside (SAOT) and that it worked “perfectly”.
Hawk-Eye Innovations published this Monday, following a request for clarification from the Technical Committee of Referees, a report explaining why Ferran Torres’ goal was correctly disallowed after the controversy surrounding the placement of the offside line, which may not be parallel to the goal line.
The company explains in a statement that when a 3D scene is projected onto a 2D image, parallel lines in the real world that recede in depth appear to converge to a single vanishing point on the horizon. Because the camera is aimed exactly at the offside line in this image, the offside line therefore appears perfectly vertical.
For this reason, lines on either side do not appear parallel, as can be seen in the baseline to the right of the offside line and the turf lines to the left of it.
The camera image, captured from the same action but from a different perspective, shows that the offside line is parallel to the baseline, which “proves that the SAOT worked perfectly and that the decision made was correct.”
