Donald Trump maintains his offensive position against Europe. A message has now been added to the American security strategy, in which they warn that the continent is collapsing and in which they call on radical right-wing forces to vote: Europe is “weak” because its leaders are “very politically correct” and it is “destroying itself” in what the President of the United States considers to be mismanagement of migration. This also ties in with the strong criticism leveled at his administration over Brussels’ recent €120 million fine to X. After this, Elon Musk called for the “abolition” of the EU.
Trump still doesn’t bite his tongue and expressed this in an interview with Politico. “Europe doesn’t know what to do. They also don’t know what to do commercially. The situation is somewhat dangerous“But it is political correctness that makes them weak,” he declared, distancing himself from any responsibility: “I want a strong Europe.” Trump understands that Russia wants it to be “weak,” but, in his own words, he has nothing to do with the Kremlin dynamic.
The tenant of the White House focuses above all on immigration. “Europe is being destroyed. You have to understand: I want a strong Europe. When they let millions of people in, many of them end up committing atrocious crimes,” he explained, citing Sweden as an example. “Now there’s a lot of crime,” he said. Germany is also worth it, he said, as a paradigm of this, and he blamed Angela Merkel directly. “He made two big mistakes: immigration and energy,” he said, also referring to his dependence on Russia. Thus, Trump believes that the old continent must learn from him when it comes to immigration. “Their immigration policy is a disaster, but I managed to stop it. Now no one comes to our country. Zero people for seven months. I mean, who would believe it? We went from millions of people to nothing,” he said.
“NATO calls me dad”
Whether or not he stands as an ally of the EU is of no concern to him. “What I want is to lead the United States, not Europe, and I see myself very involved there. NATO calls me dad. I mean, I have a lot to say. I increased defense spending from 2 to 5% of GDP,” he summarized, giving the example of Turkey. And he says he has no “enemies” in Europe. “Actually, I like them all, I’m friendly with them all. There were a few people over the years that I didn’t like, but now I like the team. I know them very well, some are friends. I know when a leader is bad, good, smart, or stupid, but they’re not doing a good job. “Europe is not doing a good job.”
“People come from all over Europe, not just the Middle East. They arrive in huge numbers and many come from prisons in the Democratic Republic of Congo and many other countries. Now they don’t want to send them back where they came from“, added Trump, who criticized European leaders for “destroying their countries.”
However, he had time to address the situation with Ukraine and warned that Russia has an “advantage” in the war and therefore a stronger position than kyiv at the negotiating table. “It’s a much bigger country,” recalled the American president, sending a message to Volodimir Zelensky. “They had lost territory long before I got there. They lost an entire coastal strip, a big strip of coast. Now it’s a bigger, wider strip. They lost a lot of land, and it was good land,” he said.
While the negotiations are somewhat stalled these days, Trump also warned that the scenario would not change, because Moscow, he said, has always had the advantage. “They always had it. They are much bigger. They are much stronger in this sense. I give great credit to the Ukrainian people and army for their courage and fighting and all that, but at some point, size usually wins. That’s a huge size, when you look at the numbers. “They are crazy,” he concluded.
At the same time, he considers that Europe “is not handling the conflict well” and reiterated that it is “not” his war and focused, once again, on the efforts of European leaders. “It started and could have led to World War III, but I think that’s not what’s going to happen now. If I wasn’t president, World War III would have broken out. I think there would be a much bigger problem than what currently exists, but the current problem is already significant. This is a big problem for Europe and they don’t manage it well,” he said during the interview.
These words, all of them, from Trump come at another moment of peak tension with Europe. “We need more than just new energy. We need to focus on build a Europe that understands that relations between allies and alliances after the Second World War have changed”For example, European Council President Antonio Costa warned on Monday that he believes the United States is no longer an EU ally because it “does not believe in multilateralism or a rules-based order.” Similarly, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas warned that it was “ridiculous” for Washington to claim that there are no freedoms in Europe, as Musk has proposed, supported on social media by other Trump administration and Kremlin officials.
Kallas also had time to react to the American security strategy, in which he calls for confrontation with Europe and indirectly calls on far-right groups to vote. The High Representative called on MPs to “remain calm” and that the EU follows its own path without entering into conflict with Washington. “I think we have to be sure of ourselves. We know that these things are not true. The problems that appear in the national security strategy are not worse in Europe than in the United States,” he told the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs committee.
