Who would be willing to share the couch — and maybe a cuddle — with a dog the size of a small polar bear? In Keswick, in the county of Cumbria, northern England, Brodie, a six-year-old Pyrenean mountain dog, has become the latest assignment for the social organization Animal Concern Cumbria, which announced on Monday (1) that the giant is officially looking for a new owner. According to the Foundation, when standing on its hind legs, the animal reaches a length of 1.83 meters and consumes about a kilo of biscuits per day.

Despite the gaudy numbers, the adoption team maintains that Brody is more calm than brute force. The 66kg dog likes to pat his head and tries to sit on anyone’s lap who pays attention to him. His fur, completely untangled to reveal his “glorious mountain coat,” is part of the striking presence he displays at the shelter. According to the organization, his last guards handed him over because they were unable to keep him.
Lauren Pickthall, 32, a member of Animal Concern Cumbria, uses humor when describing her time with the giant, saying in an Instagram post: “Stay tuned for updates as he prepares for adoption… preferably by someone who doesn’t mind getting trampled by a baby polar bear occasionally.” The person in charge also confirms that despite his size, Brody is “calm, peaceful, friendly and kind.”
The routine expected in the new home is simple: a 30-minute walk, playing with a tennis ball, and plenty of human company. Brody is currently undergoing behavioral tests with other dogs, children and different environments, which is a necessary step to ensure that his adoption is safe and appropriate, as highlighted by the foundation.
It is expected to be ready for adoption in the coming weeks. Until then, the shelter is looking for candidates with experience handling giant breeds, a large yard where he can roam comfortably — and of course a couch large enough to accommodate a 6-foot-tall guest who thinks he’s a small dog.
