Paola Espíndola, 24 years old and originally from the town of San Nicolás, in Buenos Aires, was stabbed to death last Wednesday, December 10, by her husband Alejo Grisetti, also from Nicolás, in the town of Campiglio, in northern Italy, despite having only appeared in the last few hours. The incident occurred in the morning in the dining room of a hotel where both were working while preparing breakfast.
According to Italian media Il T Quotidiano, the attacker was arrested on Friday, December 12, after being hospitalized at Santa Chiara Hospital with minor injuries. The man accidentally sustained a cut from the weapon used in the attack.
The arrest was reportedly confirmed by investigating judge Enrico Borrelli, who noted that the interrogation would take place in the coming days once the defendant had physically recovered. An information provided in the case states that the young woman was a victim of gender-based violence a few days after the marriage of Espíndola and Grisetti.
No witnesses
Prosecutor Nadia La Femina’s reconstruction of the event shows that the couple, recently married and living in Potenza (southern Italy), had arrived in Val Rendena about ten days before the incident. Both worked as waiters, receptionists and restaurant staff at the hotel where the attack took place.
According to this reconstruction, the man took a knife and stabbed his wife while they were organizing the morning’s chores, with no other witnesses present. Grisetti viciously attacked her and stabbed her more than 20 times in the chest, arms and back. To escape her attacker, the young woman threw herself from the third floor.
Other hotel employees heard the screams and went to the scene, where they found the young woman lying on the floor bloody and with multiple wounds.
Rescue workers and carabineros intervened immediately and transferred both to the Santa Chiara Hospital. The woman’s condition was listed as very serious, while the attacker was taken to hospital for observation.

Maira Espíndola, the young woman’s sister and the only family member who was able to travel to Italy to accompany her, explained that Paola’s lungs “are perforated (that’s why she has drains to remove water or blood), but they are developing very well and that’s why she is now out of danger.”
In addition, he stated that the victim “has a broken left shoulder blade. The liver was punctured in several places, but miraculously it works well, because while he was defending himself he covered it so as not to damage his intestines,” and that “the right kidney was also punctured, but it works well, he pees normally.”
Finally, Maira explained that her sister suffered an injury to her right wrist, which should have affected a tendon. “Apparently she severed a tendon, so she needs surgery too so she doesn’t lose her mobility. Once they do the two surgeries, they’re going to remove the drains in both lungs because that’s fine, but they don’t want to remove them until they do the scapula surgery,” he said.
In this context, the family launched a solidarity collection to cover the high costs of travel and accommodation in Italy, as well as the medical costs related to the young woman’s hospitalization, operations and recovery. They are also trying to raise money for both of them to return to Argentina. Anyone who wants to collaborate can do so by bank transfer to the pseudonym ALL.POR.PAO in the name of Maira Espíndola.
