Madrid, December 13 (EFE). – The heavy rains, wind and strong waves have put five autonomous communities on the peninsula (Andalusia, Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia and the Basque Country), the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla and the Canary Archipelago on alert this Saturday.
Also in Andalusia and Ceuta, the warnings issued by the National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) are of the “orange” type (significant risk), as the rainfall is forecast; in Galicia due to strong waves; and on all islands of the Canary Archipelago.
The meteorological situation is particularly unfavorable on the Canary Islands, where 80 liters of rain fall per square meter in many places, wind gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour, waves of 5 and 6 meters high occur on the coast and snow falls in the north of Tenerife.
The orange warning level has been activated in the seven Canary Islands most affected by Storm Emilia today and the instability will bring very strong wind gusts from the north with expected strong and persistent showers and storms that will leave significant snow accumulations on the peaks.
Rain, wind, storm and wave warnings have been activated in Andalusia; in Asturias, the Basque Country, Cantabria and Melilla from the waves that will hit the coast; in Galicia also due to waves and fog inland of the province of Lugo; and in the city of Ceuta there are warnings about rain, wind, storms and waves.
Storm Emilia, named on Thursday by Aemet, moved slowly south yesterday and remained between the Canary Islands and the Gulf of Cadiz until tomorrow.
As a result, this storm will produce a storm of wind, waves and heavy rainfall in the Canary Islands, as well as heavy and persistent rainfall in the extreme south-west of the peninsula and the strait area.
Instability across the Mediterranean is expected to increase from tomorrow, with rainfall potentially causing significant accumulations in areas to the south-east of the peninsula. EFE
