
Helena is the preferred first name in Brazil in 2025, with 28,271 registrations in civil registry offices, while Ravi leads among male first names, with a total of 21,982 registrations. The data was published this Monday (12/22) by the National Association of Registrars of Natural Persons (Arpen-Brazil).
A survey by the Civil Status Transparency Portal, which brings together birth records from across the country, shows that Ravi overtook Miguel, who topped the men’s list between 2020 and 2023, and took the top spot. Among the girls, Helena remains in first place for the second year in a row.

Helena’s leadership in 2024 and 2025 reinforces a change seen in the list in recent years, after a long period dominated by male first names. The last female name to occupy the top spot in the ranking was Maria Eduarda, in 2016.
The previous year, Ravi, now the leader among male names, only appeared in fourth place, with 21,697 records.
Meanings
The names that top the ranking have different origins. Helena is associated with meanings such as “light and shine”. Ravi, on the other hand, has Sanskrit origins with the meanings of “Sun” or “Sun God”.
