In a technical tie, the two main candidates for the presidency of Honduras, the Central American country bordered to the north by the Caribbean Sea and to the south by the Pacific Ocean, are awaiting the results of the vote. This is the fourth consecutive day in which votes are being counted, with about 85% of the process completed so far.
The counting of votes was delayed twice due to technical malfunctions, according to the National Electoral Council. The two right-wing candidates are competing head-to-head: Governor Nasri Asfoura, who enjoys the support of US President Donald Trump, and TV presenter Salvador Nasrallah. According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the difference between the two is very small, not exceeding 0.3 percentage points.
The presidential elections took place in Honduras last Sunday (11/30), amid a sharp dispute between the candidates of the right and the weak left.
When the first technical malfunction occurred two days ago, Trump accused Honduras of trying to falsify the result of the current presidential elections, saying “there will be serious consequences” if the result is falsified. “It is necessary for the commission to finish counting the votes. Hundreds of thousands of Hondurans need to have their votes counted. Democracy must prevail,” he wrote in the newspaper Truth Social.
But according to CNE, “This is a technical malfunction in the publishing platform, and we are working to resolve it; this was not a decision made by CNE. We are seeking clarification and will be holding an extraordinary meeting with the company at 9:30 pm today; the system will likely be working again tomorrow morning, which is what the company has informed us.”

Former Honduran president released from prison
Trump’s interference in the political direction of Honduras goes beyond the election. Recently, he pardoned former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who left a prison in the United States.
American courts sentenced Hernandez to 45 years in prison on charges of drug and weapons smuggling. The pardon drew international attention for its inconsistency, as Trump invests heavily against human trafficking in Latin countries, such as Venezuela and Brazil.
