Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will undergo surgery to repair two inguinal hernias this Thursday (12/25), one day after leaving the Federal Police (PF) prison. The procedure is scheduled for 9 a.m. and is expected to last approximately four hours.
Bolsonaro was admitted to DF Star hospital on Wednesday morning (12/24), under high security. This is the first time he has left the PF Superintendence since his arrest on November 22.
By order of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), the former president’s room will be monitored by two PF agents, 24 hours a day during the hospitalization period. Security teams must also be on alert inside and outside the hospital unit.
On the first day of his hospitalization, Bolsonaro underwent pre-operative examinations, with assessment of cardiological and surgical risks, and was deemed fit for the procedure.
After hernia repair surgery, the medical team will assess the need for an anesthetic block on the phrenic nerve to relieve the former president’s hiccups.
Brasil cardiologist Ramos Caiado reported that the PL politician is “depressed” and has recurring hiccups.
“The president is a little depressed, because of the situation he is going through, quite anxious. The anxiety leads to recurring hiccups, which disrupt his sleep. So, he is very uncomfortable with that,” the doctor told reporters this Wednesday.

Understanding surgery
- Bolsonaro-type hernias occur when part of the intestine or other internal tissue “leaks” through a weakened point in the abdominal muscles, forming a lump or bulge that can cause pain and discomfort.
- The procedure involves repositioning tissue that protrudes from the abdominal wall.
- In Bolsonaro’s case, the bulge was identified in the groin. The surgical procedure can be performed laparoscopically or with a cut for correction.
- In all cases, general anesthesia is necessary. Doctors must place some sort of synthetic mesh to heal the opening. The barrier created will prevent hernias from returning.
According to doctors, Bolsonaro will remain hospitalized between 5 and 7 days. With this, he will be able to spend New Year’s Eve in the hospital.

Visits
Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro was assigned as her companion for the duration of her hospitalization. This Wednesday, Moraes authorized the visit of the children of the former president: Flávio, Carlos, Jair Renan and Laura Bolsonaro. The only one not mentioned in the decision is former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who resides in the United States.
According to hospital rules, there is no time limit for children to stay in the hospital. However, only two people are allowed in the room at a time: Michelle and one of the children.
On Wednesday morning, former Rio de Janeiro city councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) went to the hospital door to see his father arrive. Until then, he was forbidden to visit him.
“I’m in a public space, I’m going to try to look at it. That’s what I have to do. For me, it will undoubtedly be a Christmas present,” said the former president’s son at the entrance to the hospital. Hours later, Moraes allowed his children inside.
In the afternoon, his daughter Laura visited her father, according to Michelle. “They hugged a lot and talked a lot, even between sobs,” the former first lady wrote on her Instagram page.
