Until the publication of the latest National Security Strategy, the open secret of Trumpism’s foreign policy was its similarity to the domestic policy pursued by the occupant of the Oval Office. The 33-page document is the closest thing to … an indictment against Europe. The main accusation is none other than treason against Western civilization.
As vice-president/mamporrero JD Vance already pointed out in Munich, we Europeans are guilty of tolerating mass immigration, imposing so-called restrictions on freedom of expression, undermining national sovereignties, practicing regulatory asphyxiation and tolerating, with the help of wokism, a suspicious loss of vigor. Never mind that the alarm clock is an essentially gringo invention.
In these times of universal ill will and open resentment, the remedy offered by the illiberal MAGA doctrine is the closest thing to regime change in Europe, supporting the Trumpism-infused far right that is already leading election polls in the UK, France and Germany.
Meanwhile, in Spain, recurring efforts to impose foreign policy through domestic politics – always toxic, self-serving and short-term – are reaching grotesque extremes. It’s not just that, on every major international front, from Morocco to Venezuela to China, the government is unable to allay suspicions that someone is charging outside national interests.
Sanchismo’s diplomatic juggling games attempt to cover the Peugeot gang with the Tesla gang. Among NATO allies, Spain is marginalized due to its minimalist defense investment posture. And EU partners see with perplexity that the major initiatives proposed by Madrid have been to introduce Catalan into Brussels’ earphones and to demand an audit of telephone voting at Eurovision.
I hope that throughout the year 2026, Franco will finish dying once and for all and the flotilla float will deflate forever.
