I’m not old enough to live immersed in nostalgia for better times, but lately, every time I set a date, I end up remembering with greater nostalgia that phase when, when Friday came, the meeting point was clear, but the time to return home was not. There was no agenda, no agenda.
It was common to spend hours unraveling all the details of a single topic before moving on to the next. And if the day wasn’t enough, the conversation continued the next day… Speaking calmly was as natural as waiting for the friend who always arrived late at the same place where, several times before, the whole group had already gathered. There was no rush, no alarm.
Even though meetings have a time to end
A few weeks ago, a friend we were having lunch with turned off an alarm during dessert to say goodbye. He had set a reminder to go to another appointment. At the table, the gesture arouses disapproval: “It was precisely today that we managed to meet again…”. But this judgment hides the real problem: we meet less and less – and always in haste.
This so-called “catch-up culture” is a direct consequence of the busy life syndrome that dominates Western society. Time continues to be counted in the same way: minutes with 60 seconds, hours with 60 minutes. What has changed is the excess of commitments. We overload our schedules, and as we try to fit more and more things into the same amount of time, we end up taking away…
