Politics is the natural habitat of Hugo Motta, raised by political parents and grandparents from the city of Patos, in the interior of Paraíba – all of whom were denounced at some point for embezzlement of public funds and abuses committed while in office. All.
But that did not mean he was ready to assume the presidency of the House when he did so last February, thanks to the work and grace of his predecessor, Arthur Lira of Alagoas. Supported by 17 parties, Motta was elected with 444 votes out of a possible total of 513.
In his first speech after his election, he emphatically defended democracy and repeated the gesture of Ulysses Guimarães during the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution, brandishing a copy of the text and saying he was “disgusted with dictatorship”.
According to Motta, “the Brazilian people do not want discord, they want jobs; he does not want a struggle for power, but for the powers to fight to obtain it,” adding:
– I am sure that the past is a path of no return, it leads to the destruction of politics, to the collapse of democracy. We will always be with democracy. And his enemies found a barrier in the Legislature, as they have always found in history.
Words in the wind. It was too much land for Motta’s little truck.
Ten months later, Motta will be forced to accept the decision of Alexandre de Moraes, Minister of the Supreme Federal Court, who canceled the session he chaired and where the Chamber maintained the mandate of deputy Carla Zambelli.
“This is a VOID ACT, due to obvious unconstitutionality, demonstrating both a lack of respect for the principles of legality, morality and impersonality, as well as a blatant deviation from the goal,” Moraes decreed, to the shame of Motta. Unless…
Unless Motta could be embarrassed for being caught disrespecting the Constitution. Zambelli was convicted twice by the Supreme Court and her sentence became final. She fled to Italy, where she was imprisoned. She must be extradited.
It was the Supreme Court that revoked his mandate. All that remained for Motta was to inform his peers of the matter and appoint Zambelli’s replacement. But he did not do so, subjecting the Supreme Court’s decision to the scrutiny of his supposed supporters. This is what we saw.
What now, Motta? You have 48 hours to swear in the new MP. Are you going to face the Supreme Court again? Are you going to violate the Constitution that you swore to uphold again? Are you going to risk impeachment proceedings being opened against you?
Members of his political family escaped the sanctions to which they were subject. Do you think you will be so lucky? Even by going to Justice, you became a lame duck Speaker of the House (nothing to do with Patos). Perhaps the first in history.
