Goalkeeper Hugo Souza has preached attention to Corinthians chasing the Copa do Brasil title. The player was the hero of the black and white team’s qualification for the final, not only with good saves in regulation time (in which Timão was beaten 2-1), but also with two saves in the penalty shootout (5-4 victory).
In a post-match interview, still on the Neo Química Arena pitch, the player congratulated his teammates, but said he wanted everyone to focus on the tournament decision. In the athlete’s opinion, the Corinthians jersey could influence the decision.
“I would have liked us to win the match, it would have been more peaceful. Here, at Corinthians, things are never peaceful. I want to congratulate the team, everyone. We ran very well. At all times, we believed that we were going to qualify. We are going in search of a title, a final against a team which, certainly, had a better season than us. But we are Corinthians, our jersey weighs a lot. I want to thank everyone, our staff, the management, the president, Fabinho (the soldier, the strong man of football).
Hugo did not forget the fans and said that the desire to win the Brazilian Cup involves “giving joy” to the fans in a troubled year: “When the Brazilian Championship ended, we turned the key and understood that we had something very big to defend. To make it a historic year. Now we have the chance to get our hands on the cup and seek that title that the fans deserve so much, to be happy again.”
Hugo Souza rejects comparison with Cássio at Corinthians
In the same interview, Hugo Souza was asked about his goalscoring career for Corinthians. The athlete cited as a reference Cássio, an idol of Timão who currently plays for Cruzeiro, but said he wanted to build his own in Alvinegro.
“I have to respect Cássio’s story a lot, it’s phenomenal. An incredible story at the club, he is among the biggest idols. I have to respect him, but I’m very happy with this moment, building my story day by day, step by step. I don’t want to be compared to anyone, I just want to make my journey, my story here at the club,” he said.
The goalkeeper also commented on his dream of defending the Brazilian team in the 2026 World Cup. Hugo reported that he changed his routine to defend hopscotch.
“A different moment in my life. I think the peak of my life has been reached now. I know there are still many things to call a peak. But, of course, I dream of the World Cup. I do my part by working every day. I changed my routine, I changed my life by thinking about it. And of course, it all comes through what I do here (at Corinthians),” he concluded.
