“I gained some things, but I lost them”

— It’s a very pleasant challenge because it’s the first, first of all. I started doing television at Globo when Projac didn’t even exist (as Estúdios Globo was called). I think it’s amazing that the broadcaster did this. They constantly reinvent themselves, to the rhythm of the present moment, modernity and what is happening. The vertical soap opera still really has a soap opera feel. The only problem I had was with the movement marking, because the framing is vertical. Everything was very simple and quick. I am a good student, I learn quickly.

The actor, who during his 42-year career has seen many changes within the profession, comments on the wave of influencers who have migrated to the audiovisual sector, as is the case of Jade Picon, the villain of the plot:

— First of all, there must be room for everyone. We live in a democracy and I think everyone should have opportunities. And time will tell. There is a good example in Grazi (Massafera). She left “BBB” and started a soap opera. At the time, everyone criticized, everyone spoke. I remember meeting her shortly after in Sapucaí during the carnival and I said to her: “My daughter, you are very good, don’t listen to what they say because it’s absurd.” So much so that she became what she became, a wonderful actress. I love Grazi’s work. Jade has this thing about being an influencer, but she does a great job. I am sure she is dedicated and studying. And if it wins, it will be on merit. Not everyone who enters is established.

After finishing recording the vertical soap opera, Marcos still has no new projects in mind. He explains why he never wanted to work behind the camera:

— I could lead, but I have a very personal thing: I don’t know how to lead anyone. I don’t think it has much to do with my personality or the way I am. This is why I think I chose the right profession.

The actor, who made his television debut in 1988, says he has yet to achieve financial stability:

— I managed to acquire some things, but I lost them along the way. There was no way. For example, during the whole time I worked at Globo, instead of going to events like everyone else, I took advantage of my salary to go to the theater. With all the money I made doing television, I acquired some things, but since I was out of work for a while, I couldn’t achieve financial stability that would leave me in peace.

Marcos is about to turn 60 and shares how he deals with aging:

— My head doesn’t feel it, because I talk really well with everyone, from people my daughters’ age to my friends. I have an absolutely evolved mind. What suffers a little is the body. But other than that, I’m a normal person almost 60 years old. Everything is calm, everything is cool, because I understand finiteness and that at some point everything ends.

The actor has two adult daughters from his relationship with Paloma Duarte, which lasted from 1997 to 2003. They married shortly after the birth of 29-year-old Maria Luiza, from the actress’s previous relationship with Renato Lui. Shortly after, 28-year-old Ana Clara was born. Marcos talks about his relationship with them:

— Maria Luiza is not my biological daughter, but she is my daughter, because when I married Paloma, she was 10 months old. She has a wonderful father, Renato, who I adore. He’s a super present guy, super cool, but I also consider myself his father. Today, she studies medicine in Argentina. And the youngest, Ana Clara, decided to become an actress. There was no way. She is the daughter of actors, the granddaughter of an actress and singer and the great-granddaughter of Lima Duarte and Marisa Santos. I consider that today I am reaping wonderful fruits. I joke that being a father was my best role. I love being a father. I love my relationship with my daughters, because it has always been absolutely frank, open and sincere. I take care of them and they take care of me today.

Marcos also talks about his relationship with his ex, now married to actor Bruno Ferrari and mother of Antônio, 9 years old:

— We spoke during our meeting. It is a normal relationship between those who have separated and those who are not together. So I have the greatest respect and affection, it’s a relationship of wanting well, for everything to go well and for her to be happy.

Single for many years, Marcos says he has gotten used to being alone:

— After Paloma, I was alone for 12 years. Then I got into a relationship and have been single again for over 10 years. I learned a lot to love living in this solitude, in my corner. Many years ago I learned to live with myself and my conflicts. But there are times that aren’t so cool, where you really worry.
