THE former president Jair Bolsonaro confirms, in a handwritten letter (see at the end) and announced by his children this Thursday (25), the senator’s pre-candidacy Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) to the Presidency of the Republic, in 2026. The letter was read by the parliamentarian himself to the press at the DF Star hospital, where Bolsonaro is admitted for surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia, scheduled for this morning.
In the letter, Bolsonaro states that “throughout his life he has fought difficult battles, paying a high price, with his health and his family, to defend what he believes is best for Brazil.” Although it was signed this Thursday (25), the letter, according to Flávio, was written on December 23, still in Superintendence of the Federal Policewhere the former president is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for coup attempt.
“Faced with this scenario of injustice, and with the commitment not to let the popular will be silenced, I took the decision to nominate Flávio Bolsonaro as pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, in 2026,” wrote the former president. I deliver the most important thing in a father’s life: his own son to the mission of saving Brazil. This is a conscious and legitimate decision based on the desire to preserve the representation of those who trust me,” he wrote.
Bolsonaro also says the senator is the “continuity of the path to prosperity” that he began long before becoming president. “I believe we must take back the responsibility of leading Brazil with justice, firmness and loyalty to the desires of the Brazilian people. May God bless you and give you the power to lead this chain of millions of Brazilians who honor God, their country, their families and their freedom.”
The former president was admitted to DF Star Hospital, this Wednesday (24). After a battery of preoperative tests, including an echocardiogram, laboratory tests and coronary angiography, which only identified small fatty plaques with no impact on the procedure, the medical team indicated that he was ready for surgery.
Flávio Bolsonaro said he was with his father before reading the letter and was preparing to begin the procedure. It is expected that doctors will evaluate, during bilateral surgery to correct an inguinal hernia, the possibility of performing another procedure due to hiccups.
“I think for me it doesn’t change anything here. Again, as many say I haven’t heard from him, I haven’t seen a letter signed by him, I think that removes any shadow of doubt. So for me it doesn’t change anything, for some who still didn’t believe it, it can change. I just ask that everyone come together. PT to destroy our country,” the parliamentarian said.
The senator reinforced the predictions reported by the doctors responsible for the former president this Wednesday (24) and said that the intervention should last approximately three hours. According to him, the operation is delicate and the technique to be adopted by the team must be as minimally invasive as possible, due to the procedures previously carried out by the former president.
On Wednesday, the medical team indicated that the initial estimate is a hospitalization of five to seven days, depending on the clinical course after surgery. The procedure consists of making an incision on each side of the groin to identify the hernia, which is repositioned in the abdominal cavity, followed by reinforcement of the weakened area by the installation of a polypropylene mesh.
Doctors say the option of open access, not laparoscopic or robotic techniques, is due to the former president’s multiple prior abdominal surgeries, which generated adhesions and would increase the risk of intestinal damage in minimally invasive approaches.
