India: Cylinder explosion in nightclub kills at least 23 people

A fire at a nightclub in the resort town of Goa, India, has killed at least 23 people. The information was released by local authorities this Sunday morning (12/07), local time.

According to preliminary information, among the victims are several tourists. The cause of death was reportedly the explosion of a gas cylinder on Saturday night (12/06), reported the Press Trust of India agency.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said most of those killed were kitchen workers at the nightclub, which also operated as a club, including three women. Among the victims, three died from burns and the rest from asphyxiation.

“The investigation will examine the exact cause of the fire and whether safety standards and building regulations were followed. Those responsible will be subject to the strictest penalties under the law – any negligence will be punished strictly,” Sawant wrote on social media.

Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire in Arpora has claimed the lives of 23 people.

Goa police chief Alok Kumar confirmed to the country’s press that the fire was caused by the explosion of the cylinder.

“At least 23 bodies have been found. Those who died were employees of the club,” Kumar said.
