The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a danger alert, represented by the color orange, covering eight states for the possibility of an intense heatwave. The warning is initially valid until 6 p.m. this Friday (26/12), but can be extended.
The alert covers cities in the following states: Espírito Santo, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. (see map below). The onset of a heatwave represents a health risk, according to Inmet, due to the average increase in temperatures of 5°C, over a period of three to five days.
States on alert for the danger of heat waves
Parts of the Southeast region have already been experiencing high temperatures for several days. The city of São Paulo recorded 35.9°C at 4:00 p.m. in Mirante de Santana, this Thursday (25/12), where there is a station maintained by Inmet. The temperature was the highest of the year in the city.
Among the five highest temperatures recorded last Wednesday (12/24), according to the Institute, four are in municipalities in the southeast:
- Record (SP): 39.7°C
- Morretes (PR): 39.5°C
- Rio de Janeiro (RJ): 39°C
- Niteroi: 38.7°C

Storms
Another danger alert issued by Inmet concerns storms. Two states are likely to experience intense rain this Friday. They are: Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Two tornadoes recently recorded, with winds in excess of 100 km/h.
Inmet’s warning is valid until 9 a.m. this Friday, but may be extended. The storm warning may bring precipitation of between 30 and 60 millimeters per hour (mm/h) or up to 100 mm/day, with intense winds with speeds of 60 to 100 km/h and hail.
Due to rain, there is a risk of power outages, crop damage, falling trees, flooding and electric shocks.
Due to the possibility of this phenomenon, Inmet advises that in case of gusty winds, people do not shelter under trees and do not park their vehicles near transmission towers and billboards. It is also recommended to turn off electrical appliances and the general power supply.
In the event of an emergency, you must call Civil Protection (telephone 199) and the fire brigade (telephone 193).
