Images posted on social media show train cars rolling off the tracks in a rural area. The train was on the route of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor, which connects the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific and usually carries cargo and passengers. The road was opened in 2023.
It is one of the most important infrastructure works of the government of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), as part of a strategy to boost economic development in southeastern Mexico.
In a statement, the Interoceanic Corridor said that, from the first moments after the accident, immediate assistance was provided to passengers, with the support and coordination of local authorities. Work is also underway to collect technical and operational information to determine the circumstances of what happened.
