The winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, Iranian Narges Mohammadi, was arrested this Friday “violently” during a tribute to Khosrow Alikordi, a human rights lawyer who died last week, announced the foundation that bears his name on the social network X, which claims to have received “credible information” about his arrest.
The Foundation also mentions that other Iranian human rights activists were arrested by the country’s security forces during the ceremony honoring Alikordi, a well-known lawyer found dead in his office in Tehran a week ago.
The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate was on parole and, at the end of November, she publicly denounced that the Iranian authorities had permanently banned her from leaving the country. Also that he is not issued a passport to be able to visit his two children, whom he has not seen for 11 years, and who live in exile in France.
Mohammadi was released from prison a year ago due to health problems. The activist was arrested thirteen times, convicted nine times and last imprisoned in 2021.
Despite her convictions and imprisonment, the human rights and women’s rights activist continues to denounce human rights violations in Iran, including the application of the death penalty or violence against women who do not wear the obligatory Islamic veil,
The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded her the prize in 2023 “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for the promotion of human rights and freedom for all.”
