The girl, identified as Ava, died in December 2023 after suffering brain damage caused by injuries inflicted by the woman, Mizan Online, a vehicle of the judiciary, reported at the time.
After a trial, the woman was convicted in March 2024 based on the law of retaliation, known as “qisas”, which states that murder must be “paid for” by the loss of another life, unless the victim’s family forgives or accepts compensation.
Naser Abatati, president of the Supreme Court of West Azerbaijan province, where the crime was committed, said the execution took place in the early hours of Saturday.
He added that Ava’s mother “strongly demanded” the application of the law of punishment. Authorities have not released the name of the executed woman.
Iran, which maintains the death penalty for crimes such as murder and rape, typically carries out executions by hanging at dawn.
Iran is the second country in the world that uses the death penalty the most, behind China, according to human rights organizations such as Amnesty International.
