Mounjaro, a tirzepatide drug, known for its potential to help control type 2 diabetes and also reduce weight, has shown beneficial results and improved quality of life. However, the use of a weight loss pen should only be done on medical advice and combined with diet and physical exercise.
The popularity of the drug is accompanied by doubts: during the holidays, is it possible to consume alcohol using Mounjaro?
“Studies do not show that the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the use of Mounjaro is prohibited. But there is a risk of hypoglycemia, nausea, vomiting, decreased absorption of certain nutrients and, even rarely, some liver toxicity in patients with pre-existing liver problems,” warns Dr. Durval Ribas Filho, nutritionist, president of the Brazilian Nutrology Association (ABRAN).
Considering that distilled alcoholic beverages, when ingested alone, can cause hypoglycemia, the doctor specifies that this is a risk in people with type 1 diabetes or even poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
“People with a history of severe hypoglycemia, patients who use insulin or sulfonylurea type medications (oral antidiabetics), subclinical dehydration, because both – alcohol and Mounjaro – can cause dehydration, cramps, fatigue, as long as there is not a good fluid intake, he adds.
