Liverpool striker Alexander Isak came off the bench to score the opening goal in his side’s 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, but suffered a potentially serious injury in the process.
Isak was introduced at half-time after a torrid first half in which Tottenham’s Xavi Simons received a straight red card and opened the scoring for his side in the 56th minute before limping off.
Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s lead with a header in the 66th minute, but Liverpool pulled away and Tottenham substitute Richarlison fired home after a scramble in the box in the 83rd minute.
Liverpool had a nervy finish and had to endure nine minutes of stoppage time as Tottenham felt they could avoid the club’s 11th consecutive league defeat. Tottenham finished with nine men after captain Cristian Romero was sent off for picking up a second yellow card.
Liverpool were unconvincing and held on in the end against nine men, but the victory took them to fifth place with 29 points, while Tottenham are in 13th place with 22 points.
