Israeli authorities are analyzing information recently collected by their intelligence services which would indicate a possible Iranian link with the murder of Portuguese physicist Nuno Loureiro, shot dead in the United States. The information was published by the Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post, which emphasizes, however, that there is, to date, no concrete evidence directly linking the crime to the actions of a state.
- Portuguese physicist who headed the MIT laboratory is shot dead in the USA
According to the publication, the investigation carried out by Israeli organizations takes into account the sensitive area of the professional activity of the Portuguese, specialist in fusion energy, a technology considered strategic and having a potential geopolitical impact. However, sources interviewed by the newspaper emphasize that the hypothesis remains at a preliminary stage.
Nuno Loureiro was 47 years old, worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was internationally recognized for his research in the field of nuclear fusion, which he himself described as capable of transforming “humanity”. Born in Viseu, he graduated in Lisbon and completed his doctorate in London, before moving to the United States, where he lived for around ten years.
Father of three children, Loureiro was killed Monday evening by three gunshots at close range, in front of his house, in a suburb of the Boston area. A neighbor reported hearing the gunshots to police, but the perpetrator has not yet been identified and is still on the run.
According to the Jerusalem Post, the physicist was married to an Israeli citizen and kept posters supporting Israel on the window of his residence, information which is also taken into account as part of the parallel investigation carried out by Israeli authorities.
Despite initial speculation, the main investigation remains the responsibility of North American police, who have not yet revealed the suspects or the motive for the murder. The researcher’s colleagues said they saw “no reason to justify” the crime, further deepening the mystery surrounding the case.
The murder investigation remains under investigation, while U.S. and Israeli authorities monitor the progress of the investigation.
