Less than an hour from Pontevedra is the Spa Mondariza luxurious spa whose medicinal waters are recognized throughout the European continent. Indeed, in 2024, the spa won the “Wellness Experience”, awards created in 2017 which reward the best wellness centers.
It is in the municipality of Pontevedra of Mondariz-Spaopened in 1873 and is considered a pioneer of Galician hydrotherapy. It includes part of a hotel, a golf course, a SPA, a restaurant and a conference room.
History of the Mondariz spa
The Mondariz spa began its history thanks to the promoter Enrique Peinador Candlewho was one of the promoters of Galician hydrotherapy and who, with his brother Ramón, took the initiative of make the waters of the Mondariz springs public. Years later, they would build the “Gran Hotel” due to the excellent reception.
Two of the periods which marked the history of the place were the Civil wara time when it ceased to be a hotel and became a blood hospital, and a fire which took place in the 70s and affected the building.
They went through the spa recognized figures like the writer Emilia Pardo Bazán or the queen consort Victoria Eugenia de Battenberg, the engineer Isaac Peral or the poet Ramón Cabanillas.
A spa of more than 3,000 square meters
The jewel of the spa is the Water Palace. It has an area of more than 3,000 square meters, a swimming pool with water beds, hydromassage benches, vertical jets, geysers, swan necks and counter-currents. Additionally, outside the pool area are six saunas, jacuzzis, a footbath room and, outside, a hot water pool.
He triangle circuit It is the most famous spa, inspired by Celtic balneotherapy 2,000 years ago. It offers five types of relaxing techniques: the peeling effect shower, the indoor collective bath, the Celtic sauna, the pressure jet application and the outdoor collective hot water bath. It lasts an hour and a half.
Prices and schedules
He current schedule To access the Water Palace of the Mondariz spa, proceed as follows:
- Monday to Thursday: in the morning it is closed and in the afternoon it opens from 3:30 p.m. at 9:30 p.m.
- Friday: in the morning it is closed and in the afternoon it opens from 4:00 p.m. at 11:00 p.m.
- Saturdays: Its hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- Sundays and public holidays: from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
THE ticket prices -which must be obtained by prior reservation, both for those staying at the hotel and for those coming from abroad-, cost 30 euros, both for adults and for children over three years old, and include a two-hour circuit. Additionally, the spa offers three bonus options:
- Family check (2 adults + 2 children): 100 euros.
- Bonus 10 sessions: 250 euros.
- monthly premium: 130 euros.
Currently the spa is activated an offer of 75 euros to spend a night in a hotel + spa. On Saturdays and public holidays on December 24, 31 and January 7, the price rises to 98 euros.
