Maximilian Paul Diarmuid Irons was born on October 17, 1985 in Camden, London to the famous actor Jeremy Irons and the Irish actress Sinead Cusack. He grew up surrounded by a family of artists – including his grandfather Cyril Cusack and the actresses Sorcha and Niamh Cusack – and knew from a young age that he wanted to pursue acting. “I think I was 16 when I realized I wanted to be an actor. I used to want to be a fighter pilot, but I wasn’t ready to kill anyone,” he said in an interview with IndieLondon.
However, dyslexia presented a challenge: “It was difficult for me to read, but that never quenched my desire to tell stories,” he explained in an interview with Young Hollywood. To deal with this disorder, he used a technique: “I memorize the entire scripts before the audition… I learn the lines of all the characters so I can read in public without feeling exposed,” he confessed to the New York Post. Regarding his parents’ support for acting, he once recalled his mother’s words: “There will be unemployment, disappointment, envy, doubt; but if you’re okay with it, we’ll have your back.” And his father advised him: “Pay attention to everything you do… Nothing should be more important to you than acting. Enjoy it and don’t take yourself too seriously.” As for his famous last name, he candidly admitted: “It opened some doors for me… and closed others too.”
