The Vice-President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, described as “important” and an “act of justice” the removal of the name of the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, from the sanctions of the Magnitsky law. Speaking recently to journalists in São Paulo, Alckmin also stressed that President Lula had always clearly expressed, during negotiations with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, his intention to review not only the customs tariffs imposed on Brazil, but also the sanctions caused by the application of American legislation.
“It was an act of justice, a recognition of the work of the Brazilian Supreme Court, which is why we are always happy to see justice prevail,” Alckmin said. “From President Lula’s first telephone conversation with President Trump, he stressed the need to modify the application of the Magnitsky law. I was at his side and I listened,” he detailed.
Asked whether the federal government expects “new gestures” from the United States, the vice-president responded that the two countries had “a path” for dialogue, repeating that the bilateral relationship must be “win-win”.
PL dosimetry
Alckmin also commented on the approval of the bill that changes the punishment dosimetry for those convicted of attempted coup d’état and abolition of the democratic rule of law. For him, such legislative changes harm the vision that public opinion and the population have of the functioning of justice in the country.
“I think we should never make legislative changes based on momentary problems. Legislation should be stable, it should be more structural. It should not be driven by local problems. On the other hand, it also reinforces the feeling in public opinion that when it’s a simpler person, it’s tough. But for white-collar crime, for the most powerful, it slows down.”
Elections
When asked if he intended to run in the São Paulo government elections next year, Alckmin disagreed and simply replied that it was too early to make a decision. “We have to wait. It’s almost a year away. In politics, it’s been a century,” he stressed.
