From dream postcard to death trap. The KLM Putri Sakinah is one of many ships that tour the Indonesian islands with tourists on board. As in other vacation destinations, luxury depends on the ship and its price. but the experience … it’s the same: sailing the sea to exotic destinations. What no one expected was that Andrea and Fernando’s trip with their children, one of many crossing the archipelago, would end in tragedy.
The Valencian family was traveling on board the KLM Putri Sakinah when the waves surprised them in the middle of the sea. The boat is a wooden boat of approximately 22 meters in lengthwhose appearance is reminiscent of ancient fishing boats, and they traveled to Komodo Island to see the dragons, during an excursion as part of the family’s Christmas vacation to Indonesia.
The boat, according to one of the web pages that offers its services, It had four cabins and could accommodate 10 passengers.. In another they point out that its capacity is 8 people. According to Boat Komodo Tour, which, according to ‘Las Provincias’, is the company with which the family contracted the excursion, it had five cabins. At the time of the sinking, as authorities indicated, 11 people were on board.
Large deck space
“Comfortable, clean, good food and excellent crew”, this is how one of the websites defines the boat. Another says there’s “plenty of space on deck to relax, rain or shine.”
KLM itineraries include transfer to and from Labuan Bajo, a private trip with an English-speaking guide, snorkeling equipment and meals. Depending on the package purchased, the excursions last between two and four days, and their respective nights. Its price starts at just over 1,000 euros, depending on the excursion.
For the moment, search work at sea continues even if the hope of finding Fernando and the three miners alive is minimal. The work will last at least until Monday and if the bodies are not found, they will be considered deceased. After two days of searching, rescue teams found neither body nor boat, only pieces.
Search offshore jobs in Indonesia
The priority for the family is now to repatriate the minor rescued to Spain as quickly as possible, according to Enrique Ortuño, the minors’ grandfather, to ABC, and to accompany Andrea, the mother, to Indonesia for the duration of the search. They issued a statement on Sunday asking that the search for the missing people not stop until they find the boat.
