The Uruguayan forces his own goal which led to penalties, but regrets a decisive error in the elimination of Fluminense against Vasco
The 2025 season ended in a bittersweet and painful way for Fluminense and, more specifically, for Agustín Canobbio. The Uruguayan striker experienced a real paradox during last Sunday’s classic (14), valid for the return of the semi-final of the Copa do Brasil. During regular time he was decisive: from his feet came a poisoned cross that resulted in an own goal from Vasco defender Paulo Henrique. This gesture guaranteed the victory of the Tricolors by 1-0 and led to the decision of the place of the Cal brand. However, fate was cruel to those who held out hope.
During the penalty shootout, Canobbio went from hero to villain in a matter of seconds. The player saw his shot end up in the hands of goalkeeper Léo Jardim, an error which directly contributed to Guerreiros’ team’s elimination against rivals Vasco da Gama. This Monday (15), still under the impact of the fall of the Maracanã, number 14 used his social networks to break the silence. In a text full of sincerity, the athlete did not hide his deep depression.
Canobbio does not hide his guilt for the elimination
Canobbio described the feeling of guilt he feels and admitted that the image of the opposing goalkeeper’s defense kept coming back to his mind. The frustration becomes even greater as Fluminense fought bravely throughout the 90 minutes to overcome the deficit in the first match, driven precisely by the Uruguayan’s play which resulted in the own goal. In the comments, the outburst seems to have touched the supporters, who understand the effort made on the field and the inevitability of football.
The striker stressed that he shares the same pain as the stands, because the desire to win the title and crown the season was a common goal. Despite the unfavorable scenario and momentary “anger”, Canobbio took a resilient stance and promised to work hard to put the club back on the path to glory.
“It’s only been a few hours and the anger and frustration at the opportunity we missed is still there… That penalty never leaves my mind… You and I wanted the same thing, so I know how you feel and I promise we will come back stronger. Have no doubt: we will put the flu where it deserves. Thank you for your unconditional support and understanding,” he wrote.

With the elimination in the Copa do Brasil, Fluminense officially enters the holiday period. The board and technical committee now begin planning for 2026, with the confidence that Canobbio, despite occasional mistakes, remains a key player in delivery and intensity for the team’s rebuild over the next cycle.
