Italy allows the accommodation of descendants of Brazilian immigrants

A new law benefiting the descendants of Italians in Brazil and six other countries came into force on Thursday (12/4) in Italy. From now on, the government of the European country allows entry and accommodation for paid work to descendants of Italian citizens from Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Australia, Canada, Venezuela and Uruguay.

In this way, citizens of the included countries are now outside the quotas established by Decree No. 286 of 1998, the main legislation governing immigration and the status of foreigners in Italy. On the contrary, the new law does not define a group of immigrants.

The government’s justification for choosing the aforementioned countries is due to the current size of the Italian communities residing in them. In the seven countries there are more than 100,000 people registered in the register of Italian citizens residing abroad (Aire).

According to the government, as of December 31, 2024, more than 100,000 Italian citizens resided in Argentina, 989,901 in Argentina (989,901), 682,300 in Brazil, 241,056 in the United States, 166,848 in Australia, 148,251 in Canada, 116,396 in Venezuela, and 115,658 in Uruguay.

The Italian government considered it appropriate to encourage re-immigration of descendants of Italian citizens residing in the aforementioned countries, and rejected a request from the General Council of Italians Abroad to accept descendants of South Africa, Mexico, Peru and Chile.

The decree that led to the law was signed and published in the Italian Government Gazette in November, by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, as well as the Ministers of the Interior, Labor and Social Policies, according to local newspaper Il Poste.

This legislation is known as the “Influx Decree,” and the current government has repeatedly described it as the best way to bring new foreign workers to Italy legally. However, criticism often links the initiative to the regulation of foreign workers already in Italy, who previously worked illegally, according to local newspaper El Post.
