The mother of Tainara Souza Santos, 31, a woman who was crushed and dragged in November and who died this Wednesday (24), said that “it is an immense pain, but the suffering is over.”
“Now it is time to seek justice,” Lúcia Aparecida Souza da Silva posted on Instagram on Wednesday evening, commenting on the death of her daughter, hospitalized since November 29 at the Hospital das Clínicas, in the city of São Paulo.
“Rest, I thank you in advance for all the messages of prayer, affection and love you have had for me and for my daughter. She has just left this cruel world and is with God,” the text also says.
Douglas Alves da Silva, 26, perpetrator of the crime, was charged with femicide against Tainara and attempted murder against a man who accompanied her that day.
The collision occurred on the morning of the 29th at Parque Novo Mundo, north of São Paulo. The driver hit Tainara on an avenue that provides access to the Tietê seafront and continued to drive, even with her body attached to the vehicle, for 1 kilometer.
Security cameras recorded the collision. Drivers who were nearby also filmed the car with the woman’s body dragged across a section of the road.
After the accident, Tainara had both legs amputated and underwent five surgeries to help reconstruct the injuries caused by the amputations. Due to the complexity of her injuries, she has been intubated since the day of the accident. Doctors said she was no longer responding to medication and was very weak.
Lawyer Marcos Leal, who is defending Douglas, said he did not intend to hit Tainara, but rather the man who walked alongside him as he left a bar. He claims Douglas did not know Tainara and never had a relationship with her – which contradicts reports from Tainara’s family and a friend of Douglas’s who was inside the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Douglas also denied to police that the collision was intentional and claims he did not know Tainara or her partner. He also said he did not notice the warning from other drivers that the victim was being dragged by his vehicle. According to him, he left the scene for fear of being attacked.
