The snowstorm recorded this month in Panticosa (Huesca), between 2,600 and 2,700 meters above sea level, cost the lives of three skiers. They are Jorge García-Dihinx, his partner Natalia Román and Eneko Arrastua, who were part of a group of six climbers who escaped unscathed. An injured woman of Guipuzcoan origin was rescued with symptoms of hypothermia and transferred by helicopter to a hospital center. All have extensive experience in mountain sports.
García-Dihinx was a pediatrician at the San Jorge Hospital in Huesca, a science popularizer and one of the most recognized voices of Pyrenean aragonés in the field of mountain skiing and meteorology. Originally from Zaragoza, aged 55, he was practicing this sport in a group when the avalanche occurred on the western slope of Tablato peak, near the seaside resort of Panticosa. The detachment was caused by the breaking of a layer of snow, dragging the mountains downward.
Jorge García-Dihinx, especially as a pediatrician, was a very well-known figure in the mountain world. He is the founder of the future portal La Météo, a reference for mountaineers and ski enthusiasts for its weather analyzes and its defense of the health benefits of green spaces. Additionally, we supported the collection of guides Ski routes. Aragonese Pyrenees published by the Prames editorial team and considered a common reference work for those who practice mountain skiing in Aragon. On his Instagram account, he shared nutrition and health advice while spending his time in the mountains.
It also caused the death of the pediatrician couple, Natalia Román, a resident of Zaragoza in Switzerland and known for her high performance in long-distance mountain tests. Since I started competing, I have achieved several important successes, notably in the Gran Trail Trangoworld Aneto-Posets (GTTAP), one of the races of ultra-trail the most demanding in the Pyrenees, with a distance of 105 kilometers and some 6,700 meters of elevation gain. During several editions of this test, Román dominated the women’s career, reaching the Benasque goal in first position and consolidating herself as one of the best representatives of this practice.
Román was also the author of his own blog, Permanent movementwhere he recounts his experiences skiing, mountaineering, and active living (including dealing with type 1 diabetes, a condition both have openly addressed in their reports). Alongside him, Eneko Arrastua, 48 years old and originally from Irun, also lost his life. Arrastua was very fond of skiing and running in the mountains and belonged to the Kbrnzs group, formerly known as the Mugalaris of Irun, which was very popular in the locality, according to local media.
