
The Prado Museum published this month on its social networks a video in which the actor José Sacristán, an essential interpreter of the Spanish stage and cinema, expresses Ramón Gaya’s reflections on the Madrid Pinacoteca, the masters of painting and the essence of art restored during its 1953 rehearsal. Spanish rock. The recording was made to celebrate the incorporation of the original manuscript of the book into the funds of the institution, donated by his widow, Isabel Verdejo.
The work “condenses the deep relationship between the Murcian painter and writer with Prado and his role in Spanish cultural identity,” assures Prado in a press release, where he informs that the text will be part of the Museum Library. “The initiative to commemorate the figure of Ramón Gaya and his unique vision of the Prado Museum was born from the desire of this institution to increase the value of culture and the weight of art in our identity,” states the widely distributed text.
Ramón Gaya, a Murcian writer and painter who died in 2005, had a close relationship with the Prado Museum since he visited it for the first time at the age of 17 thanks to a beca del Ayuntamiento de Murcia. This institution was his main pictorial and emotional referent throughout his career. This link was further strengthened when, in the Educational Missions of 1932, he copied works from the museum to take them to rural areas as part of a “pueblo museum”, a symbol of his social and educational commitment.
After being exiled during the civil war, Gaya called the Prado “a kind of homeland,” a place of belonging and comfort, both physical and spiritual.
The 2025 of the Prado
With the publication of this video, the Prado has decided to say goodbye to the year 2025. The museum is celebrating a new attendance record, for the third consecutive year, with a total of 3,479,838 visitors, surpassing last year’s 3,457,057 million visitors.
