The president of the Junta de Andalucía and co-president of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), Juanma Moreno, considered this Thursday essential that European regions raise “their voice” so that they are taken into account before the Union project … European adaptation to climate change announced by the European Commission.
In his speech to the CoR plenary session, Moreno said Europe must be “resilient in the face of climate change“You not only have to prepare it, but also adapt it.”
In this context, he considered that “it is up to the regions to raise their voices, as we have done on other subjects that are close to our hearts, because it is an issue that affects us very much”, and he recalled that, taking into account the European plan announced by the European Commission and whose presentation is scheduled for mid-2026, There is “an open public consultation via the web of the European Commission in which any citizen can participate.”
He said the Committee of the Regions wants the outcome to “constitute a strategy which must be consistent with other initiatives linked to climate change and coordinated and participated by all actors involved”.
Thus, he considers that from the Committee of the Regions, “we must work and join forces in our territories, as we have been adapting and preparing for some time.”
“We have the experience and this must be one of the essential pillars of the European initiative”, as the president expressed about the role of regions in the fight against climate change.
For Moreno, it is essential that the CoR works “in close collaboration with the European Commission and with all Member States so that the future framework of the European Union for climate resilience truly reach the local level and provide territories with the necessary tools to anticipate risks, protect our citizens and safeguard our economy and therefore our progress. »
All this became clear, as he pointed out, at the last United Nations Climate Change Summit, held in Brazil. He indicated that the COP continues being the central global climate forum, and the only space in which governments at all levels come together, alongside business, civil society and the scientific community itself.
“The COP gives us a platform to influence the goals that will be translated into legislation within the European Union, sharing solutions with regions in other parts of the world. and also experienceand build an alliance with the private sector and civil society itself,” said Moreno, who has participated in several UN summits on climate change.
“A better Europe is also possible, prepared and adapted to the great challenges that climate change will pose and confront us every day,” he declared.
