The president of the PSD, Gilberto Kassab, defended that the current governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), runs for president in 2026, even in the face of the candidacy of Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), and indicated that a national alliance with the son of Jair Bolsonaro should not take place in the first round.
“I still understand that Tarcísio is the best candidate for Brazil,” he said on Thursday (11), during the Todos pela Educação event, in Brasilia.
“I wish him (Flávio) good luck, that he has a good campaign. But the PSD has always had a very clear position. The PSD’s decision is to support Tarcísio if he is a candidate. And if he is not a candidate, we have two pre-candidates within the party”, he added in reference to Ratinho Júnior, from Paraná, and Eduardo Leite, from Rio Grande do Sul.
Current Secretary of Government Relations in the Tarcísio government, Kassab said Wednesday that he would leave his post to focus on next year’s elections.
This Thursday, he raised the possibility of supporting the re-election of President Lula (PT).
“Even in the second round, the party will not close the debate. But, as I believe that our candidate will go to the second round, (…) then I think that our candidate will face Lula in the second round,” he declared.
Since announcing earlier this month his intention to run for president with the support of former president and now ineligible Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Flávio has not received the support of any other major right-wing party.
In an interview with Leafthe leader of the PP in the House, Deputy Doctor Luizinho Teixeira (RJ), said that the Bolsonaristas’ decision was made without talking to the other parties and that they should work for another center-right candidacy.
Kassab also said that if he were in Congress, he would vote in favor of PL Dosimetry, which reduces sentences for people accused of coup plots. However, he affirmed that the PSD would not impose a position on its parliamentarians on this issue. The matter must still be submitted to the Senate.
Hugo Motta
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), also attended the Todos pela Educação event, but refused to meet with journalists.
The parliamentarian has not yet clarified the censorship of the work of the press in the House last Tuesday, during the forced dismissal of deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ) from the presidency.
At the time, the session was no longer broadcast on the internet, the press had been forced to leave the plenary by the legislative police, and there had been disturbances with shoving and attacks against journalists and deputies.
