
The average labor costs per employee per month (including salaries and social contributions) increased by 3% in the third quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 3,111.76 euros. This is the first time since the data series began in 2000 that they have exceeded 3,100 euros in a third quarter, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported on Tuesday.
This year-over-year increase in labor costs, in line with the previous quarter, accumulates 19 consecutive quarters of increases.
Labor costs consist of wage costs and other costs. Between July and September, gross salaries (all remuneration, both in cash and in kind) rose by 2.8% year-on-year, reaching an average of 2,268 euros per employee per month, the highest in a third quarter since the series began in 2000.
Other costs (incidental wage costs) amounted to 843.76 euros per employee per month in the third quarter of the year, which corresponds to an increase of 3.5% compared to the previous year. The most important component of other costs are mandatory social security contributions, which increased by 3.6% in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.
According to the INE, labor costs per effective hour rose by 2.6% year-on-year to 25.72 euros in the third quarter of the year. Labor costs per paid hour rose by 3% year-on-year to 20.25 euros.
Salaries increased at an annual pace in the third quarter in all autonomous communities, with the exception of Murcia, where they fell by 1.3%. The Balearic Islands and Extremadura recorded the largest increases, with increases of 5.8% and 5.1% respectively.
In the third quarter, 152,677 vacancies were registered in Spain, 2,136 more than in the same quarter last year.
