The mayor of Algeciras (Cádiz), José Ignacio Landaluce, officially registered his resignation as senator of the Popular Group after having himself temporarily suspended his activism due to the complaint filed against him for alleged crimes of embezzlement and sexual harassment or abuse, as informed by popular sources to Europa Press. The decision would have been imposed by the leadership of the PP, even if for the moment he remains an advisor.
Landaluce himself announced this week his temporary suspension of PP activism to defend his honor in the face of the complaint filed by the PSOE before the Supreme Court for embezzlement, influence peddling and sexual harassment or abuse. The complaint was filed on Tuesday, although it had been announced months ago by the socialists without having been implemented.
José Ignacio Landaluce has been a popular senator since 2016 and, during this legislature, he has been president of the Foreign Affairs Commission, as well as a member of five other parliamentary commissions. The same sources specified that it is up to him to decide whether he retains his position as senator or if he resigns, even if for the moment he will move to the Mixed Group of the Upper House.
President of the local PP
However, this Thursday, he occupied his seat within the popular group, even if he is no longer a member of the party. His request for resignation reached the party on Thursday itself, as confirmed by the general secretary of the Andalusian PP, Antonio Repullo, who did not specify whether an internal investigation would be opened to clarify what happened to the man who was until now president of the local PP and member of the regional board of directors.
In a note, Landaluce clarified that to better defend himself against the accusations, he resigned from his organic functions, but he did not do so from his institutional functions as mayor of Algeciras and senator. However, the PP has now forced the departure of the Popular Group after registering its resignation.
Regardless, the mayor of Algeciras continues to denounce that the actions of the PSOE “are due to pure political opportunism, seeking to take advantage of moments of particular internal vulnerability of his own party to reactivate unfounded accusations with the aim of exhausting the municipal government.”
