The Leoncitas’ enthusiasm is unbroken: They defeated Germany 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the Junior World Championship in the Chilean National Stadium. With this result, the U21 team reached the semi-finals this Wednesday, where China will emerge as rivals. The Netherlands – defending champions – and Belgium will host the other semi-final.
The first quarter showed a balanced development: both teams had a penalty corner, but were unable to take advantage of the chance. In the second quarter, Argentina scored again, which was saved by the German goalkeeper. Later, Germany managed a clear approach, but the Argentine goalkeeper reacted in her penalty area.
In the third quarter, the Leoncitas opened the scoring with a short corner from Juana Castellaro, which made the final score 1-0. Just a minute later, Germany also equalized the game with a solid action: the immediate equalizer robbed the girls of the joy of the partial advantage and the person responsible for the 1-1 was Gesa Lubienski (42nd), after a great individual performance.
Already in the last quarter, Argentina had another chance from the penalty spot without success until a shot from Lourdes Pisthon produced a rebound that fell into the hands of Victoria Falasco, who sealed the final 2-1 final score with a mixture of removal and pushing that surprised the Germans.
With 4 minutes and 50 seconds left, the German coach decided to eliminate the goalkeeper in order to add a field player, and after the green card that Falasco received, the Argentina has set itself the goal of holding out with one less player.
