Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish celebration that commemorates two key events
The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, Feast of Dedication or Feast of the Maccabees, was celebrated on Bondi Beach. This celebration commemorates the rebuilding of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the rebellion of the Maccabees against the Hellenic Empire of the Seleucid dynasty (165 BC), representing the determination of the Jewish people to preserve their religion and the right to practice it.
Organized by the Chabad Hebrew center in Bondi, the event started at five in the afternoon (7 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) near the beach play park and many families were present with their children.

Moments of great tension
Videos broadcast by media and social networks show many people dispersing as gunshots and police sirens are heard. Another, chilling, captures the moments when the police tend to the wounded bleeding on the sand. They try to resuscitate some of them with chest massages while another man lies dead with a piece of clothing covering his face. One of these videos also shows two people dressed in black shooting at the crowd gathered on Bondi Beach. Another, published by the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ newspaper, describes the struggle of a person dressed in civilian clothes and a white t-shirt who wrests a rifle from one of the perpetrators of the shooting, who is wearing a black t-shirt and a man’s bag.
