China denounces that the US is violating international law by seizing foreign ships
The US’s arbitrary seizure of foreign ships constitutes a serious violation of international law, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Monday.
The spokesman made the comments in response to a media inquiry about the US Coast Guard’s seizure of an oil tanker on December 20 local time, after which a White House official claimed the vessel was part of an alleged “ghost fleet”.
“China always opposes unilateral sanctions that are unlawful due to their lack of basis in international law and, moreover, have not been approved by the United Nations Security Council. It also opposes any actions that violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, violate the sovereignty and security of other countries, or constitute unilateral acts of intimidation,” Lin said at a daily news conference.
