Eurovision is an important negotiation so much so that the inertia of a partial vision of reality obscures the economic projection it implies. It would therefore be appropriate to submit to popular vote to prevent the will of all from being hijacked by a few.
Let’s first analyze the … the most obvious: the “dog in the manger”. RTVE makes decisions not only for itself, but also for everyone. Eurovision is a global visibility platform, with an audience that varies between 150 and 200 million people on linear television, and up to 350 million on streaming and on social networks. In short, it is one of the largest non-sporting events in the world.
Today, with Eurovision being broadcast in Spanish, our American brothers are deprived of the possibility of benefiting from an official broadcast in their language. And this, of course, is the reflection of a “dog in the manger”, which neither eats nor lets eat, because it prevents the emergence of other initiatives: for example, those that have tried to imitate the Chiquilicuatre phenomenon. All of this leaves a void that others could fill, such as Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and even Canada, if invited. And from its origins, Eurovision has always been much more than just a musical competition. It was a space of culture, integration and generation of geopolitical visibility. Even if some still maintain a slightly outdated vision of the festival, it has managed to reconnect with new generations.
RTVE’s decision not to participate is too important to be taken at the ‘sanhedrin’ at dawn. Let us not forget that, just as it has not withdrawn from European football or basketball competitions, it will not withdraw from Eurovision either if the principle of representativeness is applied. It is time not only for RTVE to make a decision, but for the people to speak out. The solution is simple: carry out a popular consultation with two clear and direct questions: Broadcast yes or no? and Participation yes or no? So the people will be the judge. Eurovision in the referendum.
