After a meeting of the council of ministers, the Lithuanian executive – a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) – justified this measure by citing a threat to human lives, property and the environment. According to the government, the balloons are carrying contraband and following unusual trajectories, raising suspicions that it is a deliberate destabilization operation.
— The emergency was declared due to disruptions in civil aviation and national security concerns. It is necessary to establish closer coordination between institutions — said Minister of Internal Administration Vladislavas Kondratovičius, according to the Portuguese newspaper Sic Notícias.
