The death of Lucky, a 14-year-old dog, alerted residents of northern Bogota to a type of animal cruelty that occurs frequently in the city: the poisoning of pets by contaminated food, particularly sausages, left in parks and residential areas.
The case, which occurred in the Cedritos neighborhood, sparked outrage and prompted an urgent call from the victim’s family So that citizens can cooperate in identifying those responsible, whose identity, according to the animal’s owners, is still unknown Caracol news.

In statements collected by the above-mentioned media, Lucky’s relatives explained that the dog briefly left the house at around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 9, when they received the gardener.
During this short period of time, the animal ate food that it found on the ground. When he returned, he started vomiting, which alarmed the family. During the inspection, they discovered remains of sausage packaging bags from his neck, which suggested that he had consumed a poisoned sausage.
“We opened his throat and pulled out bags of sausage wrappers, so we assume it’s something very similar.” explained the owners, who recalled a previous case in the Teusaquillo sector with an identical “modus operandi”.
The speed with which the poison took effect surprised the family and the veterinarian who treated Lucky. Carolina Jiménez, one of the owners, said Caracol news: “The poison is being examined. That’s what the vet told us.” It was a very deadly poison because his death was very quick, he took it and within 20 or 30 minutes he had already died.” The exact location of the incident was Carrera 15 and Calle 148 in the Cedritos neighborhood.

Julián Coy, operational director of the Alto platform, explained to the aforementioned news program that in some cases rat poison is used, although in other cases it is difficult to identify the poison since combinations of compounds can be used to increase lethality.
This type of attack involves leaving bags of sausages in places frequented by pets, such as parks, for the animals to accidentally consume.
Lucky’s case is not an isolated one. Residents and property owners themselves said other similar incidents have been reported in the area in recent months.. One involved a Samoyed dog who survived but suffered from the after-effects of the poisoning.
The repetition of these events caused concern among residents and motivated Lucky’s family to demand justice and the community’s cooperation in identifying those responsible.

In view of the repetition of these attacks, the mayor’s office of Bogotá and the animal protection institute have issued recommendations for action in the event of suspected poisoning.
Idpyba suggests inducing vomiting in the animal by administering one of the following solutions using a syringe:
- Hydrogen peroxide: one milliliter per kilogram of weight.
- Salt water: between one and three full tablespoons diluted in a glass of water.
- Activated carbon: between two and eight milligrams diluted in water.
It is noted that the proportions must be strictly observed, as excessive concentration can be dangerous. In addition, it is recommended that a sample of the suspected ingested material be taken and presented to the veterinarian, if possible along with a vomit sample, to facilitate diagnosis and treatment.
Lucky’s family reiterated their request for the public’s help to find those responsible and prevent more pets from becoming victims of this type of attack in Bogotá.
