Live | Sheinbaum shows muscle at the Zócalo: “Make no mistake, young people are with the transformation”

Claudia Sheinbaum is back at the Zócalo. After a month of protests against her government, the Morena leader called on the party and its supporters to show strength, under the pretext of celebrating seven years since the so-called Fourth Transformation came to power. This Saturday, the president gives a message – which she did not give last year and only two months after the celebration of her first year of administration – to honor the entry into the National Palace of the movement created by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in December 2018. “Let no one be mistaken, the majority of young people are with the transformation of public life in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said from the start, in reference to the controversial Generation Z protests.

The square appears full, with the flag raised and the sun beating down on the contingents of SNTE teachers, CROC workers, STPRM oil workers, miners, farmers, bureaucrats and settlers from the Morena-ruled town halls. In the streets surrounding the Zócalo, hundreds of buses and minibuses that have been transporting participants since dawn obstruct traffic on the first Saturday in December and the Christmas sales. However, some absences are also noted, such as that of the Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) of Senator Pedro Haces. This is the second time in two months that Sheinbaum has sought to fill the Zócalo for protection. Since the start of the event, Sheinbaum has been proud of the influx: “They tell me there are over 600,000 people,” she said, to which she was responded by shouting “you are not alone!”

At the end of 2025, the president maintains her high level of approval, but begins to feel the wear and tear of the government, especially after the assassination of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan; the protests of Generation Z, encouraged by young people and opposition leaders, and the protests of transporters and farmers. The support figure, 74%, is still very high compared to his predecessors, but it is the lowest since the start of his administration, according to the latest Enkoll survey, carried out for EL PAÍS and W Radio. She herself explained, in the video of this Saturday’s call, that today is an “act of defense of transformation” after a “month-long campaign of attacks”.

“These days it has been demonstrated that no matter how many dirty campaigns they fund on social media, no matter how many bot purchases, no matter how many alliances with interest groups, no matter how many communications consultants they hire to invent slander and lies, no matter how many attempts to make the world believe that Mexico is not a free and democratic country, no matter what they do, they do not will not defeat the Mexican people or their president!” Sheinabum held firm this Saturday.
