López Miras demands that Brussels allocate more funding in the 2028 EU budget to “strengthen” water efficiency

Fernando López Miras traveled to Brussels this week to attend the Committee of the Regions’ Committee on Environment, Climate Change and Energy, to demand more funding for innovation and new technologies applied to irrigation in the future European budget 2028-2034.

“The Region of Murcia is a world example in water use and management“, as highlighted by the President of the Executive of Murcia, Fernando López Miras. “RWe demand more funding to continue to innovate and improve our agricultural sector and we promote actions so that other countries imitate our model.

The head of the autonomous government said “boost” water efficiencyin the next European budget, so that this translates into the “competitiveness” of the agricultural sector. This is the request that was presented during the meeting of the Committee on the Environment, Climate Change and Energy of the Committee of the Regions, of which López Miras is a member and which debated this Friday an opinion on the role of the regions in the European water resilience strategy.

“We want there to be a larger budget in the European Union to be able to invest in the modernization of irrigation techniques and continue to implement the latest technologies in our efficient water management,” said the president, while emphasizing that the water resilience debate in the territories “is fundamental for the future of the Region of Murcia”: a community marked by the lack of precipitation and its dependence on the contributions of the Tajo – Segura Transfer.

In this sense, López Miras argued before the commission that to promote better use of water in the European Union, we must opt ​​for “renewal” of irrigation systems, to produce more with less water consumption. The regional president’s proposal takes the water management of the Region of Murcia as an example: “We want them to manage water efficiently, as other territories already do.”

“The Region of Murcia is ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to water. No other territory in the world can compete with uswhen it comes to efficiently managing every drop of a scarce resource like water.

Meeting with Roswall

López Miras also transferred these proposals to the European Commissioner for the EnvironmentWater Resilience and Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, whom he met while taking advantage of his trip to Brussels.

The Murcian president considers it right that the next European budget, for the period 2028-2034, “prioritize investments” for territories “vulnerable to climate change”due to desertification and that they must manage water much more efficiently because they suffer from a structural water deficit, like the Murcia region.
