The museum’s deputy administrator said repairs to the area were planned for September 2026.
Around 400 rare books from the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, were damaged due to a water leak in the space. According to the specialized site The Art Tribune The poor condition of the pipes causing the damage had been known for years and the museum was seeking funds to protect the pieces against such risks.
The leak occurred in November in the Egyptian antiquities department of the Louvre. This Sunday 7, the deputy administrator of the museum, Francis Steinbock, declared BFMTV that the leak affected one of the three library rooms in this sector.
“We have identified between 300 and 400 works, the count is underway,” he said, adding that the lost books were “those consulted by Egyptologists, but not precious books.”
He also confirmed that this had been a known issue for years and repairs were due to take place in September next year.
The episode takes place a few weeks after four thieves stole jewelry worth $102 million (around 554.8 million reais) from the Louvre in broad daylight, exposing the museum’s security flaws. In addition, structural problems at the site also led to the partial closure of one of the galleries housing Greek vases and offices.
