The writer and essayist Luiz Felipe Pondé debuts this Thursday (11) on CasaFolha, the streaming platform launched by Leaf last year. He directs the unique course “Philosophy: the great thinkers and their ideas”, available on the website casafolhasp.com.br.
Columnist for Leaf and Doctor of Philosophy from USP, Pondé is one of Brazil’s most eminent thinkers. He wrote more than 20 books, including “Notes on Hope and Despair,” “The Age of Nihilism,” and “Philosophy for the Brave.”
At CasaFolha, he brings together lessons on the leading thinkers of the West, in an overview that spans 2,500 years of history.
“In this course, you will find a panoramic view – but not a superficial one – which can give you a first idea of what philosophy is beyond common sense,” explains Pondé.
To take philosophy courses with Pondé, you must be subscribed to CasaFolha.

With the launch of Pondé, CasaFolha offers 32 exclusive courses led by great personalities from different fields, such as former minister Pedro Malan, who explains how he analyzes the economy, Monja Coen, who talks about meditation, filmmaker José Padilha, who talks about the art of telling stories, and psychoanalyst Vera Iaconelli, who talks about raising children in the 21st century.
Plus, new content is added every month. On November 27, for example, the “Diversity and anti-racism” course began, with social psychologist Cida Bento.
Next Monday 15, the platform will organize a live with Carla Madeira. The author of “Tudo É Rio” will answer questions related to his creative writing course. The virtual meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the CasaFolha platform. Subscribers will be able to submit questions in advance or via chat during the class.
In Pondé’s classes, he begins in ancient Greece — with the pre-Socratics, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle — and advances to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, passing through thinkers like Saint Augustine, Descartes and Kant, among others.
But he warns: “To explore the history of philosophy is not to visit an antiques fair.” We must realize that these philosophers reflected on subjects that are still relevant today, such as the search for truth, doubts about the existence of God, questions about ethical behavior in society and discussions about the best way to conduct politics.
“It’s all there: what they said is still valid,” says Pondé.
“So, the initial gain of the course, or the function of the course, is precisely to tell you what philosophy is in an introductory way, to clarify certain points”, specifies the essayist.
“But a second gain is that you understand that, probably, everything you have thought, someone has thought before – and someone better than you. So try to find out what philosophers have produced so that one day you don’t wake up believing nonsense.”
Its 12 classes at CasaFolha inaugurate the Knowledge Journey, which will add more theoretical content, aiming to broaden the intellectual repertoire.
